An LIC unclaimed amount check on LIC's official website takes a few minutes and can show maturity money, survival benefits or death claims that never reached the family. The search is free and simple. The claim is harder when the policyholder has died, there is no nominee, the policy bond is lost or the details do not match, and that is where families usually need help.
Search on licindia.in under unclaimed amounts of policyholders, using the policyholder's name and date of birth. If an amount shows, the claim is made through LIC's servicing branch. Straightforward claims can be done directly; death claims without a nominee, lost bonds and mismatched records take more work.
Under IRDAI rules, any amount unpaid 6 months after it falls due is unclaimed. After 10 years it moves to the Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund, and it can still be claimed through the insurer for 25 years after that. LIC's unclaimed amounts stood at ₹7,318.5 crore as of 31 March 2026 (Government reply in Parliament).
If you are not sure which insurer a family member used, IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal links to every insurer's search. If the policyholder is alive and the bank details simply need updating, the branch can usually sort it out directly.
| Your situation | Why it gets difficult | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The policyholder has died | A death claim needs the right forms, proof and the nominee's or heirs' documents | Unclaimed insurance claim services |
| There is no nominee, or the nominee has also died | Heirs must prove entitlement and agree among themselves | Claim without a nominee |
| The policy bond is lost | The branch needs indemnities and substitute documents | Unclaimed insurance claim services |
| Names or dates do not match LIC's records | Records have to be corrected before any payout | Free initial case review |
| The heirs live abroad | Documents have to be signed and attested outside India | NRI unclaimed asset recovery |
We identify the policies and the servicing branch, prepare the claim and heirship documents, and follow up until the claim is decided. The claimant stays the applicant and LIC pays directly into the claimant's own bank account. Expertvuw does not sell insurance and is not affiliated with LIC or IRDAI. If anyone calls offering a "refund" on an old policy for a fee, be careful: IRDAI has warned the public about such calls.
Yes. The search on licindia.in is free, and so is claiming from LIC. You do not need an agent for a simple claim where the policyholder is alive and the details match.
Unclaimed amounts move to the Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund after 10 years, but can still be claimed through the insurer for 25 years after that transfer.
LIC can still settle the claim, but the branch will ask for substitute documents and an indemnity. We help families prepare these through our insurance claim service.
The legal heirs can claim, but they have to prove who they are and usually need the other heirs' agreement. Read how this works on our page on claiming without a nominee.
