SEBI MITRA is a free SEBI-backed search that helps you find mutual fund folios you, or a family member, may have forgotten. It is the right first step. But MITRA only locates the folio: when the investor has died, there is no nominee, the old folio has no PAN or KYC, or the heirs live abroad, the transmission and claim with the fund house is where families get stuck.
SEBI MITRA (Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant), set up under a SEBI circular of February 2025 and run by CAMS and KFintech, lets investors search for inactive and unclaimed folios through MF Central. It is free. After finding a folio, KYC has to be updated and any claim or transmission is made with the fund house or its registrar.
SEBI treats a folio as inactive when there has been no investor-initiated transaction for 10 years while units are still held. Unclaimed redemptions and dividends stay with the fund house in separate plans. Unclaimed mutual fund money stood at ₹3,811 crore on 31 March 2026 (SEBI annual report).
If the investor is alive and only KYC or bank details need updating, the fund house can usually reactivate the folio directly.
| Your situation | Why it gets difficult | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The investor has died | Units must first be transmitted to the nominee or heirs under SEBI's transmission rules | Unclaimed mutual fund recovery |
| There is no nominee | Heirs need heirship proof, no-objections and indemnities; larger values need more | Claim without a nominee |
| The old folio has no PAN or the name does not match | KYC and records have to be corrected before any payout | Unclaimed mutual fund recovery |
| The heirs live abroad | Documents have to be signed and attested outside India | NRI unclaimed asset recovery |
| The family also held shares or deposits | Each has its own claim route and documents | Claim a deceased parent's investments |
We map the folios across fund houses, prepare the KYC, transmission and heirship documents, and follow up until the units or money reach the claimant. You stay the applicant and payouts go only to your own bank account. Expertvuw is not a mutual fund distributor for these claims and is not affiliated with SEBI, AMFI or any registrar.
Yes. Searching on SEBI MITRA through MF Central is free, and so is claiming from the fund house. You do not need help for a simple reactivation where the investor is alive and the details match.
No. MITRA only locates inactive or unclaimed folios. Payouts are made by the fund house or its registrar after KYC and, where needed, transmission to the heirs.
The units are transmitted to the nominee or, if there is none, to the legal heirs. SEBI's July 2026 rules simplify documents for smaller values. See our mutual fund recovery page.
Yes. NRIs can search MITRA and claim through the fund house, usually with documents attested abroad and updated bank details. We help NRI families through our NRI service.
