Larsen & Toubro Shares Recovery: Old L&T Certificates, Unclaimed Dividends and IEPF Claims

Larsen & Toubro has been a core holding in Indian households for generations, and the company has issued bonus shares many times. A small holding bought decades ago can be a substantial one today, yet many folios are still in physical form, in the name of a holder who has died, with dividends unpaid for years. Expertvuw helps families trace these holdings and recover them through the official route.

Quick answer

L&T shares and dividends remain claimable, whether they are still with the company or have been transferred to the IEPF. The holding is confirmed with the registrar, KFin Technologies Limited, records are corrected, and shares in IEPF are claimed on Form IEPF-5. Bonus shares and the UltraTech Cement shares issued in the 2004 demerger are checked at the same time.

Why L&T shares go unclaimed

  • Bonus issues. L&T has issued bonus shares several times. Where the holder's address was out of date, bonus certificates were returned undelivered and the family never knew of them.
  • The 2004 cement demerger. L&T's cement business was demerged into what is now UltraTech Cement, and L&T shareholders received shares of that company. Families who hold old L&T certificates often have an unclaimed UltraTech holding as well.
  • Physical folios. Certificates are still on paper, and KYC, bank details or signatures no longer match.
  • Dividends unpaid for seven years. Where dividends stay unpaid for seven consecutive years, the shares are transferred to the IEPF.

How L&T share recovery works, in broad stages

  1. Establish the holding. The folio, the number of shares today and the dividend years outstanding are confirmed with KFin Technologies.
  2. Put the records right. KYC, bank details, name, signature and, where the holder has died, heirship are brought up to date.
  3. Claim from the right place. Shares and dividends still with the company are released through the registrar. Those already transferred are claimed from the IEPF Authority on Form IEPF-5 after the company confirms entitlement.
  4. Receive the credit. Shares are issued in demat form and dividends are paid by bank transfer.

There is no time limit to claim shares or dividends from the IEPF. Physical shares have not been transferable since 1 April 2019, so they must be dematerialised before they can be sold.

How Expertvuw helps with Larsen & Toubro shares

  1. Case review. We look at the certificates, dividend papers or folio details you have and establish what is held, in whose name and where it sits today.
  2. Tracing and records. We confirm the holding with the company's registrar, including shares that arose from bonus issues, splits and mergers, and identify what must be corrected first.
  3. Documents and follow-up. We prepare the KYC, heirship and correction papers for your signature and follow up with the registrar and, where shares are in IEPF, with the company and the IEPF Authority.
  4. Credit. Shares are credited to your own demat account and dividends to your own bank account.

Frequently asked questions

Do old L&T certificates include bonus shares?

Not automatically. Bonus shares were issued as separate certificates or credits. If they were never received, the registrar's records show whether they are held back by the company or have moved to IEPF, and they are claimed along with the original holding.

Who is the registrar for L&T shares?

L&T's registrar and share transfer agent is KFin Technologies Limited, Hyderabad. Take the current address and email from the company's investor pages rather than from messages or third-party sites. Shares held in demat form are serviced mainly through your depository participant.

Is there a time limit to claim L&T shares from IEPF?

No. Shares and dividends transferred to the IEPF can be claimed at any time by the holder, the nominee or the legal heirs, once the company confirms entitlement and the IEPF Authority approves the claim.

Can I claim my late parent's L&T shares?

Yes. The nominee, surviving joint holder or legal heirs can claim. The papers depend on the value of the holding and whether a nominee was registered. See legal heir share recovery.

What if the L&T share certificates are lost?

The holding can usually still be traced from the holder's name, old address and dividend records. If the shares are still with the company, a duplicate is issued first, now in demat form. See duplicate share certificates.

My father held L&T shares before 2004. Is there an UltraTech holding too?

Possibly. L&T shareholders received shares of the demerged cement company, now UltraTech Cement, in 2004. If those shares were never received or credited, they are traced and claimed separately through UltraTech's registrar.
