Reliance shares in IEPF usually belong to families who bought Reliance Industries shares years ago, often as physical certificates, and then stopped receiving or cashing dividends. Once dividends go unpaid for 7 years, the shares move to the Investor Education and Protection Fund. They can still be recovered, free, through the official route, and there is no time limit to claim.
Check Reliance Industries' own lists of unclaimed dividends and shares transferred to IEPF on ril.com, using your folio or DP ID and client ID. Then obtain the company's confirmation through its registrar, KFin Technologies Limited, and file Form IEPF-5 on the IEPF Authority's portal. Filing is free.
Under the Companies Act (sections 124 and 125), a dividend unpaid for 7 years is transferred to the IEPF. If dividends on a share stay unpaid for 7 consecutive years, the shares follow. This happens to many long-held shares when an address changes, a bank account is closed or the original holder dies and nobody updates the records.
Reliance's investor contacts page names its registrar and transfer agent as KFin Technologies Limited, Hyderabad, for securities held in physical form. Check the current contact details on ril.com yourself rather than using numbers sent in messages.
Yes. There is no filing fee for IEPF-5 and the IEPFA runs a helpline (14453) and free Niveshak Shivir investor camps. If the shares are in your own name, your details match and you have a demat account, you can usually complete the claim yourself.
| Situation | Why it is harder | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The holder has died | Heirship must be established before or within the claim | Legal heir share recovery |
| No nominee was registered | All heirs need to agree; larger values need more papers | Claim without a nominee |
| Certificates are lost | A duplicate or company confirmation is needed | Duplicate certificate recovery |
| Name or signature does not match | Records must be corrected before confirmation | Name mismatch correction |
| Heirs live abroad | Documents must be signed and attested outside India | NRI share recovery |
Shares that are still with the company rather than in the IEPF follow a different route. Physical shares cannot be transferred since 1 April 2019 and must be dematerialised before they can be sold.

Always take the current address, phone and email from ril.com directly rather than from messages or third-party sites. Shares held in demat form are serviced mainly through your depository participant.
No. There is no time limit to claim shares or dividends from the IEPF, and no filing fee for Form IEPF-5. Even holdings that moved many years ago can be claimed, once the company confirms entitlement and the IEPF Authority approves the claim.
Yes. As a legal heir you file the claim with heirship proof and, where there are other heirs, their agreement. The documents depend on the value and whether there was a nominee. Our legal heir share recovery page explains the route.
You may still be able to claim. The company can check its records using your name, address and any old dividend papers, and a duplicate may be needed if the shares are still with the company. See our duplicate certificate recovery page.
Yes. Shares refunded from the IEPF are credited only in demat form, to the claimant's own demat account. Dividends are paid to the claimant's bank account. Make sure the name on the demat and bank accounts matches your PAN before filing.
