SBI Shares Recovery: Old State Bank of India Certificates, Unclaimed Dividends and IEPF

State Bank of India shares are held by lakhs of families, many of them former employees and customers who bought in early public issues. Folios are often still in physical form, in a parent's name, with dividends unpaid for years. Shareholders of the associate banks merged into SBI in 2017 are in the same position. Expertvuw helps families trace these holdings and recover them through the official route.

Quick answer

SBI shares and dividends remain claimable. The holding is confirmed with the bank's registrar, KFin Technologies Limited, and records are corrected. Dividends unpaid for seven years are transferred to the IEPF and are claimed from there. SBI's website has search pages for unpaid dividends and for amounts already transferred to IEPF.

Why SBI shares go unclaimed

  • Face value sub-division. In 2014 each SBI share of face value ₹10 was sub-divided into ten shares of ₹1, so a certificate for 100 shares represents 1,000 shares today.
  • Associate bank mergers. In 2017 the associate banks were merged into SBI. Shareholders of the listed associates, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Travancore, became entitled to SBI shares in the ratio set for each bank.
  • Physical folios. Certificates are still on paper, and KYC, bank details or signatures no longer match.
  • Dividends unpaid for seven years. SBI transfers dividends that remain unpaid for seven years to the IEPF.

How SBI share recovery works, in broad stages

  1. Establish the holding. The folio, the number of shares today and the dividend years outstanding are confirmed with KFin Technologies.
  2. Put the records right. KYC, bank details, name, signature and, where the holder has died, heirship are brought up to date.
  3. Claim from the right place. Shares and dividends still with the company are released through the registrar. Those already transferred are claimed from the IEPF Authority on Form IEPF-5 after the company confirms entitlement.
  4. Receive the credit. Shares are issued in demat form and dividends are paid by bank transfer.

There is no time limit to claim shares or dividends from the IEPF. Physical shares have not been transferable since 1 April 2019, so they must be dematerialised before they can be sold.

How Expertvuw helps with State Bank of India shares

  1. Case review. We look at the certificates, dividend papers or folio details you have and establish what is held, in whose name and where it sits today.
  2. Tracing and records. We confirm the holding with the company's registrar, including shares that arose from bonus issues, splits and mergers, and identify what must be corrected first.
  3. Documents and follow-up. We prepare the KYC, heirship and correction papers for your signature and follow up with the registrar and, where shares are in IEPF, with the company and the IEPF Authority.
  4. Credit. Shares are credited to your own demat account and dividends to your own bank account.

Frequently asked questions

I have State Bank of Mysore, Travancore or Bikaner and Jaipur shares. Are they valid?

Those banks were merged into SBI in 2017, and their shareholders became entitled to SBI shares in a fixed ratio. If the old certificates were never exchanged, the registrar's records show the SBI entitlement, which is then claimed like any other SBI holding.

Who is the registrar for SBI shares?

SBI's registrar and share transfer agent is KFin Technologies Limited, Hyderabad. Take the current address and email from the company's investor pages rather than from messages or third-party sites. Shares held in demat form are serviced mainly through your depository participant.

Is there a time limit to claim SBI shares from IEPF?

No. Shares and dividends transferred to the IEPF can be claimed at any time by the holder, the nominee or the legal heirs, once the company confirms entitlement and the IEPF Authority approves the claim.

Can I claim my late parent's SBI shares?

Yes. The nominee, surviving joint holder or legal heirs can claim. The papers depend on the value of the holding and whether a nominee was registered. See legal heir share recovery.

What if the SBI share certificates are lost?

The holding can usually still be traced from the holder's name, old address and dividend records. If the shares are still with the company, a duplicate is issued first, now in demat form. See duplicate share certificates.

How do I check for unpaid SBI dividends?

SBI's website has a search for unpaid dividends and a separate search for dividends already transferred to IEPF, using the folio number or client ID and the holder's details. If you only have a name or an old certificate, we can help trace the folio.
